My sorrow comes to visit me,
She sees the rain and falling leaves,
And says these days are full of graceβ
The beauty found in quiet space.
She loves the trees so bare and old,
The wind that cuts, the air that’s cold.
She walks the muddy pasture path,
And smiles beneath the skyβs grey wrath.
Her joy wonβt let me turn away,
She speaks, and I feel drawn to stay.
Sheβs glad the birds have flown the skies,
She loves the mist that softly lies.
Her simple cloak of woolen grey
Turns silver in the foggy day.
She sees such beauty all around,
In lifeless trees and soggy ground.
She thinks I cannot see these things,
The peace the empty landscape brings.
She asks me why Iβm blind to this,
And why I do not share her bliss.
But I have known since long ago
The calm before the winter snow.
Yet words canβt make her understandβ
It means more praised by her own hand.
The idea#
Sorrow arrives as a visitor who loves the rain and falling leaves, who finds grace in bare trees and cold air, who smiles under the grey wrath of sky. She walks muddy paths and will not let the speaker turn away; she loves mist, empty landscape, the peace of what looks lifeless. She asks why he is blind to this beautyβand he knows the calm before winter snow, yet cannot make her understand that her praise changes the meaning of the scene.
Uplifting progressive trance wrapped around Robert Frostβs November Guest is a curious, almost tender transplant: emotional electronics carrying a poem about aesthetic disagreement with oneβs own sadness. Sorrow sees beauty; the self sees the same and still feels the difference of who is doing the seeing.
I find the track quietly profound. It refuses to cure sorrow by argument. It lets two ways of looking at the same bare field stand side by side until the listener decides which guest they are hosting.
