I heard an angel singing
As the morning light was springing:
“Mercy, kindness, peace—
That’s what sets the world at ease.”

All day long his voice was bright,
Ringing over fields in light,
Till the sun sank low and deep,
And the gathered hay lay steeped.

I heard the devil’s bitter cries
Echo through the barren skies:
“Mercy wouldn’t need to stay
If the poor all went away.
And pity wouldn’t mean a thing
If happiness belonged to kings.”

At his words, the sun grew dim,
The sky above looked cold and grim.
Then the storm came crashing down,
Drowning fields and soaking ground…
And suffering’s endless tide
Keeps mercy, kindness, peace alive.

Blake again, via angel and devil: mercy, kindness, peace by day; then the devil’s bitter logic—mercy wouldn’t need to stay if the poor all went away; pity means nothing if happiness belongs only to kings. Rap aggression suits the dialectic.

When the devil speaks, sun dims and storm drowns the fields. The closing turn is the point: suffering’s endless tide is what keeps mercy, kindness, and peace alive. Virtue is not free-floating; it is answer to damage.

I hear a moral argument staged as weather. The angel’s song is incomplete without the darkness that makes it necessary.
